About LEAP 9 & KWA NOBUHLE
In the vibrant community of KwaNobuhle in the Eastern Cape, LEAP 9 was established in 2026 as a beacon of hope, committed to unlocking the potential of young leaders through quality science and mathematics education
KwaNobuhle is a vibrant township located about 4 kilometers south of Uitenhage (now known as Kariega) in the Eastern Cape province of South Africa. The name “KwaNobuhle” translates to “a place of beauty” in English. Established in 1967, it was created as a result of the Group Areas Act, which forcibly removed Black and Coloured South Africans from central areas of Uitenhage to make way for industrialization and urban planning
History
KwaNobuhle has a rich and complex history, dating back to the 19th century when the area was primarily used for farming and grazing. The community has been a symbol of resistance and historical trauma, with many residents involved in the fight against apartheid.
Demographics
As of 2011, KwaNobuhle had a population of approximately 107,474 people, with the majority being Black African (99.1%) and Xhosa-speaking (94.3%).
Economy
The township’s proximity to Uitenhage’s automotive firms, including VW and Goodyear, provides local employment opportunities. However, many residents rely on the informal economy, including spaza shops, hair salons, and street vending.
Challenges
KwaNobuhle faces several challenges, including:
– Unemployment and poverty
– Limited access to capital and business mentorship
– Infrastructure gaps, such as poor roads and inconsistent water and sanitation services
Initiatives
There are ongoing efforts to improve the community, including:
– The LoveLife Youth Centre, which offers sports, HIV/AIDS counseling, and educational programs
– The KwaNobuhle Maths and Science Centre, aimed at fostering future engineers and innovators
– Agricultural innovation projects, such as essential-oils production
