When the Mail & Guardian arrived at LEAP 4 in Diepsloot, we were led past brightly painted walls to meet our guides in the busy staff room, grade 10 pupils Ilana Ngwenya and Vusi Mkhandawirne. “Are you the head girl?” we asked Ilana. “No. We are all leaders here,” she said. “Shall we begin our tour?”
South Africa is experiencing a significant rise in affordable independent learning facilities.
“LEAP shows how to save education” is the headline of the article by David Gleason in his Business Day column. The article highlights that where the state education system has failed, education models such as LEAP’s, can unlock the talent and potential of young people in South Africa.
We were recently visited by four Grade 11 students from the LEAP Science and Maths School, who were required to spend time job shadowing at a company in the field of business which they are interested in.
