Teacher, leader, chairman
As a teacher and school leader for much of his career, LEAP’s new chairman, Grant Nupen, also has invaluable corporate experience. Nupen is now an evaluator at Umalusi and a Trustee of LEAP Science and Maths Schools and St Alban’s College Foundation. He recently took the reigns as Chairman of the LEAP Board.
Grant Nupen was born in February 1949 in what was then the Transvaal. He Attended Waterkloof House Preparatory School and St Alban’s College, where in his final year was elected as Head of School, Captain of Cricket, Rugby and Hockey. He also represented the North Eastern Transvaal Nuffield Cricket XI. He then went on to achieve a Bachelor of Commerce Degree at Rhodes University with a distinction in Accounting. He also obtained a HED from UNISA with a distinction in Methodology of Accounting and Business Economics.
Grant Nupen’s professional career began at St Andrews Preparatory School in 1969 and then in 1974 he went on to teach at St Peter’s School in Rivonia where he taught Science and Afrikaans. He was then awarded with a British Council Visitor ship to the UK. In 1978 he was appointed as Deputy Headmaster at the Ridge School in Johannesburg and later promoted to Headmaster in September 1979. From there, Grant went on to become the Headmaster of St Luke’s Senior College for two years.
In 1988 Grant commenced his career as managing Director and Education Consultant to the Barlow Rand Group, Nampak Ltd and later got involved with a number of NGO’s in the field of education. He then worked for St Alban’s College as Director of Development and then in 2001 went on to become principal of Bishops School up until 2012.
Currently, Nupen is an evaluator at Umalusi and a Trustee of LEAP Science and Maths Schools and St Alban’s College Foundation. He has been recently appointed as the new Chairman of the LEAP Board.
